The chance to discover green mangroves, white sandy beaches, and the tropical beauty of Mayakoba awaits those who dare to explore this region on two wheels. From easy-going rides along the coast to challenging rides on forest trails, there are cycling routes for all levels of fitness and expertise in this part of Mexico.
Pedalling through the region offers a different perspective of its natural landscape, as well as a unique glimpse into vibrant Mexican culture. Top that off with the fact that cycling creates minimal carbon footprint and is a great way to get some exercise, it’s no wonder it has become so popular across the globe.
With that in mind, each villa at our luxury beach resort Banyan Tree Mayakoba has two complimentary bicycles to use during your stay.
Here are several routes through the resort and its surrounding area to choose from, depending on the desired level of difficulty.
Nature trail – golf course route
Approx. 4km, easy
Explore some of the destination’s most beautiful landscapes on this 4-kilometre long route around Banyan Tree Mayakoba. The nature trails at the resort are designed to smoothly connect different resort offerings and weave through the lush mangrove forests and around the El Camaleón Mayakoba Golf Course.
Start by heading towards the roundabout, then continue on a path that skirts through coastal vegetation and takes you right to the center of Mayakoba. Along the trail around the lagoon, take in views of wild birds, egrets, and other migrating species – best done in the early morning or late evening.
Bike a little further past the golf course and you’ll enter El Pueblito, which is a large outdoor courtyard modelled after an authentic Mexican village. Spend some time visiting its farmers’ market, chapel, art gallery, and boutique shops, before heading back the way you came.
Cycling on the beach
Approx. 1km, easy
This easy 1-kilometre route is great for beginner cyclists or families with kids. It provides plenty of opportunity for breath-taking views of the Caribbean Sea and some quiet time to take in a beautiful sunrise or sunset.
Starting from Banyan Tree Mayakoba, the route begins with a relaxing ride towards the coast and along the beach path. The bike lane’s compact sand offers a smoother journey than the softer terrain of off-road trails, and it’s also possible to stay on the main road if you wish. Either way, you'll be riding next to picturesque views of white sands and turquoise waters as far as the eye can see.
Along the way, stop at the Sands Beach Club for a drink and a quick swim, or simply to lounge on the adjacent powdery beach. When it’s time to head back, you can either go back the way you came, or continue further down the coast to enjoy a longer ride.
Punta Venado Bike Park
Various distances and levels of challenge
Experienced bikers looking for a challenge in the Playa Del Carmen region will find it at the Punta Venado Bike Park, where vast jungle trails, rocky terrain, and sloping hills are sure to get the heart pumping.
The ride to get there is approximately 27-kilometres long and takes you right through 5th Avenue – one of the main streets in Playa Del Carmen. Alternatively, taking a car is possible if you don't feel comfortable riding the whole way.
Once at Punta Venado, cyclists of all levels can explore a variety of beautiful routes leading out from the base camp. There are several different trails to choose from depending on skill level, ranging from easy loops to difficult single-track sections that require more technical skills.
